Set a Rustic Table for Grandma’s Traditional Casserole

Simplicity. Elegance. Natural touches.

When I think of a Thanksgiving table setting, so many different looks come to mind. From bold and beautiful oranges and yellows, to jewel tones, to simple settings with soft faded pumpkins. And there’s also one of my favorites: an outdoor table setting.

When setting a table, I think of how to create an exquisite mix of rustic charm and elegance for the occasion. You can see this in the china and gold-rimmed wine stems mixed with the simple, rustic wood-planked table, or the fresh greens simply placed on the table and fashioned into a garland for the centerpiece.

Setting a dining table outdoors lets me enjoy some of my favorite juxtapositions. I simply love the mood of being out in the fresh air, under the stars and among the music of the chirping crickets. As nature sets the backdrop, your tablescape, family and friends, laughter and the food, of course, start to take center stage.

For an outdoor table, try using freshly seeded eucalyptus for the centerpiece. It’s simple, sweet and always gorgeous (seeded eucalyptus is one of my go-to fresh greens). It’s easy to create a gorgeous centerpiece by simply layering branches on top of one another until you get the thickness you want.

Consider tucking in a few sprigs of berries for a touch of color, or even a few fresh flowers if you’d like. Then simply place several chunky Cinderella pumpkins in the center to create a festive Thanksgiving look.

With the place settings, aim to be simple and elegant. White dishes edged in gold and paired with gold flatware brings a bit of sparkle, along with charm and elegance, to your setting. I love to use gold-rimmed wine stems for nearly any occasion, but especially during the holidays. I just enjoy the touch of glam they bring.

My grandmother’s mashed potato casserole was one of my absolute favorite recipes from Thanksgiving when I was growing up. Creamy mashed potatoes blended with cream cheese, sour cream and a touch of garlic: it’s perfection that will leave your guests wanting seconds… and thirds. This dish is a tradition in our home, so we make it every year for Thanksgiving and Easter.

Let the casserole cool just a bit before serving (if you can stand waiting), and then enjoy!
